2008 BMW 6-series facelift

6_series_facelift_front.jpg

BMW’s 6-series has gone in for a facelift for the 2008 model year, receiving minor revisions to the exterior and several new additions to the engine range. Key styling differences is the wider air intake, new LED indicators, and the positioning of the third brake light onto the rear spoiler.

Inside, changes are kept to a minimum with the range getting new trim options, a more ergonomic rubber mount for the iDrive, and Sun Reflective Technology for the leather seats in the Cabrio. Most of the changes have been reserved for the car’s mechanicals with the introduction of the latest Efficient Dynamics fuel saving technology. Stop-start and brake energy regeneration systems will also feature for the first time in the 6-series.

Another first for the model will be the introduction of the 635d to the lineup, sporting BMW’s potent twin-turbo diesel 3.0L six mated to a six-speed auto gearbox. Peak output of 282hp and 580Nm of torque should see the diesel GT reach 100km/h from rest in 6.3 seconds all the way to an electronically limited top speed of 250km/h. The most impressive result, however, is the fuel consumption figure of just 6.9L per 100km, as reported by Auto Motor und Sport.

Also joining the lineup will be an updated version of the 630i packing a direct-injection 3.0L mill. Output is 270hp and 320Nm of torque, which should see the 0 to 100km/h dash completed in around 6.2 seconds. As for the other models, the 4.8L V8 in the 650i remains unchanged as does the 5.0L V10 in the M6.

The AC Schnitzer ACS3 3.5i Convertible

A Convertible provides the ultimate for the senses: Where can you experience driving more
directly than in an open car, with the wind gently emphasising the acceleration, the acoustic
muscle play of the engine teasing your ears, and a breathtaking silhouette reflected in every shop
window. The new BMW 3-series Convertible, a complete car with folding hard top, stimulates the
automotive pleasure centre without setting reason aside. When you've had one taste, you soon
long for more - for example the ACS3 3.5i Convertible.
In designing the bodykit, the objective for AC Schnitzer was not to hide the body contours under
excessive bulges, but to emphasise the natural characteristics of the vehicle in a structured way.
So the front skirt, which simultaneously increases downforce, in its basic design follows the threepiece
original but it is substantially softer, more facetted and more energetic.

Like the AC Schnitzer side skirts which aesthetically highlight the side crease of the Convertible body and
with their asymmetric lines, rising towards the back, emphasise the sporting abilities of the
vehicle even when stopped. Its charm is enhanced with the clearly marked AC Schnitzer
Racing rims type IV in silver, which at the front measure 9.0Jx20" and at the rear 10.0Jx20"
(tyres 245/30R20 and 295/25R20). As an alternative, the dark Type IV BiColor wheels in
8.5Jx19" at the front and 9.5Jx19" at the rear give the BMW a hint of Badboy (tyres 225/35R19
and 255/30R19).

Although the classic rear view of the new 3-series Convertible is already eyecatching, the
AC Schnitzer design language with its more strongly contoured rear skirt expresses extra
sporting ambitions with no loss of credibility or coherence. The twin flow left/right tailpipes of
the AC Schnitzer exhaust contribute to the neat overall impression not just visually but, with the
gas pedal pressed, also acoustically with a unique crescendo. The twin sports rear silencer is
enhanced by tailpipe trims in "Racing" design, which visually suggest a stylised horizontal figure
eight, the mathematical symbol for "infinity". A reference to the enormous power reserves of the
vehicle, expressed above all in the superb BMW six cylinder twin turbo, a power plant which has
been praised unanimously by the trade press, and which with its 306 HP/225 kW has caused
worries for many competitors. The duel would be even more difficult for them with the

AC Schnitzer performance kit which is currently in development.
The 335d will also soon
undergo a power make-over at Aachen. For the 3.0 litre diesel (standard 231 HP/170 kW) the
tuners already offer a Power-Plus pack that increases the power to 265 HP/195 kW. Power
reserves which the chassis can handle easily thanks to fine tuning by AC Schnitzer.

A special antiroll bar kit for the rear axle is already available, and the complete suspension
with race technology is just completing its final test laps on the Nürburgring. A multipiece AC
Schnitzer alloy strut brace divides asymmetric forces evenly over the entire front of the car and
provides not only a purely functional aspect but a high level of unobtrusive aesthetics. An image
which can naturally also be expected in the interior, where high quality decor and controls give the
driver the visual and tactile impression of driving a true AC Schnitzer at every moment.

STARTECH Refines the New Jeep Wrangler

STARTECH Refines the New Jeep. Wrangler

Legends are immortal and in the automotive world that is especially true for the Jeep. Wrangler, the 'mother' of all off-road vehicles. To customize the latest version of the American 4x4 and to make it even more exclusive STARTECH (Brabus-Allee, D-46240 Bottrop, phone + 49 / (0) 20 41 / 777 547, fax + 49 / (0) 20 41 / 777 111, Internet www.startech.de ) is developing an innovative and exclusive accessories program - for the short wheelbase and the new long wheelbase version.

In a first step STARTECH offers custom-tailored light-alloy wheels, some initial exterior modifications and exclusive interior options.

The polished STARTECH Monostar IV 9Jx20 light-alloy wheels attract attention at first sight. The striking five-spoke wheels lend the new Jeep. Wrangler a more exclusive appearance. But that's not all: Mounted with sporty on- and off-road tires in size 285/50 R 20 front and back they give the SUV even more agile handling characteristics while at the same time improving driving safety.

While the STARTECH design program for the new Wrangler is still under development, the first stainless-steel components will be available shortly. Sturdy tubular side guards for short and long wheelbase models protect the rocker panels of the Jeep and partially hide the Jeep's frame from view. The spare wheel cover with high-gloss stainless-steel ring adds the finishing touch.

The new Wrangler generation for the first time includes a model with diesel engine. The STARTECH motor engineers are currently developing the STARTECH SD 4T tuning module for the 2.8-liter (171 cu. in.) common-rail turbodiesel engine.

STARTECH sport exhausts will soon be available for all engine and body variants of the Jeep. The fully stainless-steel exhausts feature one characteristic oval chrome tailpipe each on the right and left, and produce a more sonorous engine sound, while at the same time optimizing power yield.

The interior of the Jeep can also be upgraded stylishly with STARTECH accessories: Highly polished scuff plates welcome driver and passengers, and the ergonomically shaped STARTECH sport steering wheel adds to the ambiance.

Additional customization requests can be fulfilled by the company-own STARTECH upholstery shop. Partial and fully leather interiors made from especially soft yet durable Mastik leather satisfy even the most discriminating tastes.

2007 Matech Racing Ford GT

Highly promising start for the Ford GT Matech Racing !

Having just arrived this Wednesday at the Adria International Raceway in order to take part in another equivalency test in view of the FIA-GT3 championship, the Matech Racing team have already scored their first victory. They completed an incredible race against time in order to bring this project to fruition, namely to bring a Ford GT up to race norms, in a serious test session with a highly successful machine ….

2007 Matech Racing Ford GT2007 Matech Racing Ford GT 22007 Matech Racing Ford GT 32007 Matech Racing Ford GT 42007 Matech Racing Ford GT 5Better than a regulation, it is a technical philosophy that the teams appointed by the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile and SRO Motorsport Group have to apply to ensure the development and the manufacture of cars retained for the FIA-GT3 Championship. A championship that experienced an enormous success as from the first year it came into being, enough to be at the root of numerous projects.

Amongst which Matech Racing, a Swiss structure who put it into their head to bring a myth back to life, namely the Ford GT40 ! In just a few months, the team run by Christian Schumacher, with workshops located within a stone’s throw of the Nьrburgring in Germany, managed to convert the Ford GT into a race car. And after several test runs on the world renowned Eifel circuit, the Matech team headed off for Adria, for a first official run, and especially to take part in this now reputable equivalency test handled byChristophe Bouchut in person.

And the least one can say is that the Ford GT did not go unnoticed. Not only did this beauty prove itself to be fast, clocking up the best lap time of the day, but its overall preparation dumbfounded more than one, starting with Christophe Bouchut himself ! “Notwithstanding its young age, this Ford GT really impressed me «, the official FIA-GT3 driver commented.” Right from the word go she was really easy to handle, and especially fast. I reckon this car has an enormous potential. Believe me they’ll be talking about this car in this type of race. We now need to see how it compares with the references in the category, but Matech Racing really carried out come great work …»

Apart from the lap times clocked by the Ford GT, it is also the practical side of the car that took Bouchut aback. «We know that she has great looks, and the effect she has on people is guaranteed. Once at the wheel I thought it would take quite a few minutes for the mechanics to fix and adjust the various elements, such as the windscreen, the dashboard, and the pedals; without forgetting the various bodywork components. Well in fact quite the contrary! In just a couple of seconds, everything was OK, and I was out on the track. In fact in an endurance race situation, such accessibility allows the mechanics to work quickly which is an undeniable advantage. Everything has been well thought out, offering maximum efficiency …»

A perfect christening for the Matech Racing Ford GT, which will be back on track in Dijon next Tuesday and Wednesday for a further series of tests. And we are leaving the final word to Christophe Bouchut. «In my career as a driver I have come across lots of cars. Well I can tell you one thing; this Ford GT has loads of spirit... truly impressive!”

A first victory for the Matech Racing Ford GT!

For the second meeting of the 2007 FIA-GT3 European Championship the port of call was the street circuit of Bucharest, some 3,111 km in length around the buildings of the Rumanian parliament. A new experience for these GT monsters; some of them unfortunately making an early acquaintance with the concrete safety walls. In these unusual conditions the Matech Racing Ford GTs proved their extreme competitiveness by clinching their first victory this Sunday!

The Matech Racing team took on this city rendezvous in a highly methodical manner. There was no question of going out to titillate those walls during the free practice sessions but rather to concentrate on a perfect set-up for the race. Notwithstanding the fact that the two cars, driven by Thomas Mutsch and Martin Bartek on the one hand (#43), Romain Bera and Stefan van Campenhoudt on the other (#44), took the start in 12th and 30th place respectively, this first race being dotted with numerous incidents and not forgetting the arrival of rain, these Ford GTs made an impressive come back up through the pack … "The #43 was the first car to call at the pits to take on grooved tyres, team manager Christian Schumacher told us, which gave us quite an advantage. Thomas went out determined to do battle, just behind Stйphane Daoudi, whose Ferrari was still shod with slicks. A major crash between two Aston Martins then occurred, and the race was neutralised right through to the finish. Outcome: Obviously the Ferrari never swapped tyres – she came in during the following lap – and even though strategically we held the advantage she came out on top. Having said that, a 2nd place as from the car’s 3rd race is pretty brilliant!" The only small regret, an administrative imbroglio prevented Mutsch and Bartek from getting on to the podium, before Stйphane Ratel personally admitted that the race marshals had made a mistake. Placed within the top 5 at the time of the first neutralisation, car #44 came in one lap later than the #43, namely at the same time as the major number of competitors in the pack, and with all the problems that could cause. As such Bera and van Campenhoudt finished the race in 13th place.

After this excellent start to the weekend hopes were high for the following morning’s race, especially as Thomas Mutsch was in second spot on the grid. The German driver was in top form and promptly took the lead. As soon as the rain appeared the Ford GT #43 came into the pitlane a first time to take on grooved tyres. A few laps later Thomas was back to hand over the wheel to Martin who promptly took the rap of ….a Stop & Go for having carried out a driver change outside of the pit-stop framework ! "Christian promptly went off to see the Clerk of the Course, Martin Bartek told us, but in the time allocate was unable to explain to them that in fact the driver change had taken place during the second pitstop and not the first one as erroneously indicated on the monitors. So in fact I inherited a Stop & Go, and talking about a Stop & Go, this was a complete stop which lasted a full minute. Absolute hell!" And Martin Bartek set off hell for leather, completing a brilliant come back from 16th to 8th place at the finish.

Luckily for the Matech Racing team, car #44 with van Campenhoudt and Bera had a quieter time on the track, thanks also to some well orchestrated strategy. Having found himself in the lead under the rain, after a prompt visit to the pitlane, the Frenchman had a flat in the last few laps….but still managed to control the Ford GT and take the chequered flag as overall winner, some 5 seconds ahead of a Porsche! "What a week-end!” Christian concluded. "Not only has the Ford won a race after only its 4th outing in the FIA-GT3 European Championship, but our two cars finished the meeting in one piece, which wasn’t the case for some of the others. The Ford GT’s chassis is pretty good, and whereas the engine output is under that of the Dodges and Corvettes we have no cause to envy the Ferraris or other Astons .Many thanks to the entire Matech team. Champagne for all!"

Honda Accord

Honda's new 2.2 i-CDTi SE sounds like great value; it comes stuffed with plenty of equipment and fine 2.2 turbodiesel engine - designed by the same bloke who invented the legendary VTEC system.

Honda AccordHonda Accord 2The price? A bargain bucket £18,600 which, when you compare spec-for-spec, stacks up mightily well against established rivals like Ford's Mondeo and the Renault Laguna.

There's just one problem. Honda is referring to it in is literature as the 'Price Fighter' specification, which is about as sexy as calling it the 'Happy Shopper Exclusive Edition'. No, Honda. No.

Still, if you're put off by the daft name, there's also the new Sport GT model. It also uses the 2.2 turbodiesel, but looks a bit sportier thanks to 17in alloys, dark chrome grille and door handles, boot spoiler, carbon-effect interior inserts, and the option of racy White Pearl paint.

Better than that, you won't have to hang your head when you tell people about it down the pub.

You can buy the Sport GT from September 1 for £20,767.

MORE ABOUT ELECTRIC LIGHTNING TECHNOLOGY

NanoSafe™ from Altairnano Inc.
Until now, battery technology has hindered electric vehicle innovation. In 2000, US company Altairnano Inc. established a research programme to create an ultra safe, high power battery using cutting-edge Nanotechnology. The result of their hard work is the NanoSafe™ battery.

SAFER - NanoSafe™ batteries use nano titanate materials instead of graphite which makes them far more thermally stable - there are no toxics or heavy metals used in NanoSafe™ batteries.

LONGER-LASTING - NanoSafe™ batteries have a life expectancy of 12+ years, versus the 3-5 year life of other batteries. NanoSafe™ can retain up to 85% charge capacity after 15,000 charges.

FASTER CHARGE - NanoSafe™ batteries can be recharged in approximately 10 minutes, rather than the hours required by many other rechargeable batteries.

MORE POWERFUL - With instantaneous power even at extreme temperatures, NanoSafe™ batteries deliver power per unit weight and unit volume several times that of conventional Lithium-Ion batteries.

Hi-Pa Drive™ from PML Flightlink Ltd
Hi-Pa Drive™ is a real revolution in motor technology and it’s a British innovation to boot! With its integrated motor and drive electronics in one single unit it produces an ultra high power density - up to 20 times more than conventional systems.

The compact, energy-efficient, electric wheel motors produce unrivalled levels of torque with internal heavy-duty tapered roller bearings that can withstand heavy radial loads for robust use. Yet they achieve the power to weight ratio important for the performance sports car capability of the Lightning
Other features include total weather proofing, total energy transfer and several levels of redundancy, so any single failure will not prevent the vehicle from operating safely.

Carbon fibre/Kevlar® composite technology in association with Amber Composites and Technical Resin Bonders
The Lightning bodywork will incorporate aluminium honeycomb crushable impact cells. This composite monocoque structure uses the same technology that is used in Formula 1 motor racing to protect the driver. This material will be used in the front, rear and sides of the car s well as around the battery area

Regenerative braking
Upon braking, the car's kinetic energy is converted to heat through friction - throwing away the energy that was previously used to accelerate. In city driving, about 30 percent of a typical car's engine output is lost to braking.

When an electric vehicle is decelerating, it does not create friction and useless heat in order to slow down. Instead it reverses its electric motor turning it into an electric generator, creating electricity which is fed back into the battery and stored for future use. In fact any time an electric vehicle decelerates it causes the system to use the vehicle's momentum to generate electricity.

Saab 9-3

At first glance, it looks like a straightforward mid-life facial tweak for the Saab 9-3, but under the skin, the Swede has had some serious re-engineering.

Prime among the revised 9-3's new technology roster is four-wheel drive or, in Saab-speak, 'cross wheel drive'.

Saab 9-3Saab 9-3 2Saab 9-3 3The 'cross' part of the name comes from the rear axle's ability to divide power between the rear wheels to behave like a limited slip differential and optimise grip.

The four-wheel-drive system can also divvy up power between the front and rear axles, sending up to 100 per cent thrust to one end or the other if necessary.

The pre-facelift 9-3's engine range remains, but is now joined by the twin-turbocharged 1.9-litre TTiD diesel with 180bhp and 295lb ft of torque to trouble that new 4x4 system.

No performance figures yet for this new diesel, but Saab says it offers the same in-gear acceleration as the turbocharged 2.8 V6 petrol (read blog), but hopefully without the wallet-clenching trips to the pumps. Which makes it fast and frugal.

Prices for the new Saab 9-3 start at £18,575 when it goes on sale in September.

The twin-turbodiesel TTiD will come in sporty Aero trim only and costs from £26,495. It is also available in the SportWagon estate and Convertible models.

Holden Torana TT36 Hatch Concept

Holden drew on General Motors’ global resources to build the hot pink Torana TT36, which is powered by an experimental 280kW twin turbo 3.6 litre Alloytec V6 engine, sports a glass roof and showcases bold directional design themes.

Holden Torana TT36 Hatch ConceptHolden Torana TT36 Hatch Concept 2Holden Torana TT36 Hatch Concept 3Holden Torana TT36 Hatch Concept 4Holden Torana TT36 Hatch Concept 5Not for production, this mid-sized hatch concept demonstrates the strength and versatility of Holden’s design talent to a worldwide audience and emphasises its ability to react swiftly to changing customer demand.

Torana TT36 highlights Holden’s rear wheel drive powertrain engineering expertise and the practical benefits to be gained by sharing GM global suspension and chassis components and modular structural systems.

The new millennium hot hatch pays homage to Holden’s Bathurst-winning icon car of the seventies, the Torana A9X. It is 25 years since the revered V8-powered Torana A9X last conquered Mount Panorama and wrote itself into Australian automotive legend.

Holden Chairman and Managing Director, Denny Mooney, today said he believed the Torana’s spiritual successor showed how times continued to change in the automotive industry.

“Torana TT36 represents a revolution in concept car design at Holden. We’ve unveiled several examples of our design flexibility and build capability in recent years, but this car is exceptional for yet another reason,” Mr Mooney said.

“All recent showcars have been based on our Commodore V-car platform. Torana TT36, on the other hand, shares many basic structural elements with the latest GM sports concepts and much of its chassis componentry is sourced directly from GM.

“It is the first Holden showcar to merge Australian design and engineering expertise with GM technical resources. Quite simply, for us it is a ‘game changer’ in automotive design and production.

“Naming the concept car was easy. We knew many fans would immediately call it Torana because it is a high powered, mid-size, rear wheel drive hot hatch. The TT36 stands for Twin Turbo 3.6.”

The twenty-first century Torana has slingshot performance potential. Its experimental 3.6 litre twin turbo Alloytec V6, hand-built at Holden’s new Port Melbourne engine plant, produces 280kW of power, transferred to the tarmac via a heavy-duty six speed manual transmission.

Ninety per cent of the 480Nm of torque developed is available from just 1600 rpm and the TT36 shares the power-to-weight advantage that helped its A9X sporting predecessor to drive into the record books at Mt Panorama a quarter of a century ago.

The four-seater showcar is finished in luminous, look-at-me pink − dubbed ‘ManGenta’ by the trend-spotting stylists who created it − contrasted against a slick new-tech interior in minimalist black and white. A panoramic glass roof extends from the steeply raked windscreen all the way back to the hatch and the TT36 sits on 20-inch, ten-spoke alloys.

The project was originally named XP54, reflecting the acronym ‘eXperimental Project’ and coded 54 in recognition of Holden’s so-called Studio 54 design workshop in the outer suburbs of Melbourne .

Holden Design Director, Tony Stolfo, said the showcar’s aggressive, sports-oriented frontal treatment recalled its hard-charging Torana heritage while speaking the design language of the here and now.

“It’s very performance-driven in terms of the size of the apertures, the air intakes and grille.

The fenders and quarter panels are pumped to accentuate width and stance,” he said.

“It also displays some of the key proportions we’ll see in future cars generally: front wheels forward, minimal overhang, high belt lines and a high deck. All these elements create strength and purpose and deliver expressive contemporary styling.

“The hatch style gives us a very fast line running over the top, and we’ve given it strong directional lines. In terms of overall design intent, it’s far more sophisticated sports machine than street machine.

“And because it’s a vehicle which delivers a really large interior compartment in relation to its exterior size, it shows off our packaging skills, which are a traditional Holden strength.”

The Torana TT36 interior is an exercise in black and white contemporary cool, described by Holden’s young colour and trim team as ‘nu luxury’. Taking inspiration from forecast fashion trends in domestic and industrial design, they gave it smoothly sculptured white leather seats and mirror-gloss finishes in piano black and pearlescent perspex, contrasted with soft-feel textures and black techno-mesh rubber floor covering.

The pink exterior theme is picked up in clever LED lighting effects and a ‘retro future’ 3D instrument layout that can be customised to the driver’s taste. Open the door and a full- length lighting strip integrated into the glass roof radiates a healthy pink glow. Press the backlit central starter button to play twin turbo engine idle music. Touch the interactive infotainment screen to control myriad functions – phone, CD, SatNav, DVD, address book and other Blue Tooth-compatible features.

“The Torana TT36 may be simply for show – but it’s not about outrageous technology. We consider that something very close to this concept could be practically achievable in the not-too-distant future,” Mr Stolfo said.

“It’s a first step towards monitoring public reaction to a type of rear-wheel drive vehicle that doesn’t exist in today’s General Motors portfolio. It could be designed and produced off a number of GM platforms, taking advantage of the virtual maths-based processes and component sharing which enabled us to build this working concept in a very short space of time.“

Saab 9-3 Unveiled - Sedan, SportCombi and Convertible

New Saab 9-3 Sport Sedan and SportCombi: Satisfying Wants and Meeting Needs

The 9-3 Sport Sedan and SportCombi range is focused on delivering a unique, 'fun to drive' experience that places it among the class leaders for sporty performance and excellent chassis dynamics.

The coupé-like silhouette and strong, sporty stance of the Sport Sedan help convey that 'moving when stationary' look. And the muscular proportions of the SportCombi are a bold reaffirmation of Saab's tradition for designing cars that are sporty in character and versatile in use. Both models are positioned in the premium, mid-size segment, providing an alternative choice to natural competitors such as the BMW 3-series, Audi A4 and Mercedes C-class.

The extensive powertrain line-up offers a 'tri-fuel' choice of gasoline, diesel or bioethanol powered engines. It includes an all-aluminum 2.8-liter V6 turbocharged engine rated at 280 hp (206 kW) in combination with all-wheel- drive (Saab XWD); a powerful two-stage turbo diesel packing 400 Nm of torque and a choice of two Saab BioPower (E85) flex-fuel engines.

Exterior Design
The sporty, distinctive looks of the Saab 9-3 Sport Sedan and SportCombi are an expression of modern Scandinavian design, incorporating contemporary and classic Saab design themes. Both models have a bold and assertive stance that reflects their strong, driving appeal. The sedan's coupé-like profile communicates its sporty character, while the SportCombi's cohesive, five-door bodystyle inherits the 'combi-coupé' genes of the first Saab 99 Turbo.

• Saab 'signature' styling cues: The wedge-like profile with its rising belt-line culminating in that distinctive 'hockey stick' curve into the C or D-pillar; the clamshell hood, the single side window graphic; the shaping of the headlamps units and smoked white rear light clusters.

• Bold frontal styling. The prominent central grille with its wing motif is inspired by the Aero X concept car, as is the U-shaped pressing in that classic Saab clamshell hood. The form of the grille and headlamp units is complemented a smooth bumper molding with a deep trapezoidal air intake.

• Distinctive alternative to conventional wagon design. The SportCombi's compact proportions - its raked rear screen and the short rear overhang, with a small glass area behind the C-pillar - distinguish it from traditional wagon formats.

• Excellent aerodynamics. Impressive drag coefficient of 0.28 for the sedan and 0.33 for the SportCombi. Low lift forces for good high speed stability, with SportCombi first Saab to achieve zero lift values at both axles.

Interior Design and Features
In common with all Saab cars, the 9-3 Sport Sedan and SportCombi are designed 'from the driver outwards'. That means the cabin ergonomics, the instrumentation, the controls and the seating position are all developed from the driver's perspective. The SportCombi adds versatility features, such as a surprisingly large cargo deck, to facilitate the active sports and leisure pursuits of owners.

• ****pit feel. The main instrument panel arcs around the driver. Logical layout and tactile feel to controls. Steering wheel adjusts for both rake and reach.

Audi Q7 vs BMW X5 vs Land Rover Discovery

land rover bmw x5 audi q7

The original BMW X5 made quite a splash when it hit SA showrooms in 2000. It wasnt the worlds first upmarket 4×4 the Range Rover preceded it by nearly 30 years but its arrival, more than that of any other model, helped to kick-start the surge in popularity for full-size SUVs.

The X5s blend of sexyness, sporting attitude, BMW quality and class-leading road manners made it the first choice for more than 50,000 South African buyers.

Environmental concerns mean the SUV sector is less fashionable now than it was eight years ago, but that hasn’t stopped BMW predicting great things for its second-generation X5. The larger newcomer is cleaner and more efficient than its predecessor, has revised front suspension to improve dynamics and, perhaps most importantly, now offers family buyers the option of seven seats. However, the premium 4×4 market is flooded with talented machinery such as the Audi Q7. The manufacturer took its time to jump on the SUV bandwagon, but its seven-seat offering aims to be all things to all men, combining space, comfort and quality with real driver appeal. Yet its unlikely the Germans will have everything their own way in this test. Our current class champion is the Land Rover Discovery. It makes no pretence at being sporty, but its sheer versatility has won it a legion of fans.

The original X5 surfed the SUV wave when the market boomed, and sold in huge numbers as a result. The second-generation model won’t have such an easy ride. Its still a fine car, though. Its increased practicality is welcome and it drives with the same verve and agility as its predecessor.

Factor in the superb straight-six diesel, and the X5 has the Q7 well beaten. The Audi tries to be all things to all owners, and falls between two stools as a result; its neither as crisp to drive as the BMW, nor as versatile as the Discovery.

Ultimately, the Land Rover is a very different car to the BMW, so the choice here boils down to your own personal priorities the X5 is for keen drivers with an eye on image, while the Discovery is for those who value comfort and convenience above all. Our pick is still the Discovery for it’s legend off road history which over powers the Audi and BMW offerings designed for on road activities.

Audi Q7 reviewed

audi.jpg

Size matters. Or at least that seemed to be Audis philosophy when it came to developing its first off-roader. The Q7 is massive: 250mm longer and 68mm wider than the Discovery with a wheelbase of more than three metres.

It only looks small when parked next to the Land Rover in our group shot because its comparatively low at 1,737mm. Trouble is, unlike most other Audis, which tend to be neat and handsome, the Q7 isnt particularly well executed. The heavy flanks and tall nose make it look big, bulky and cumbersome, while its sheer size means the styling comes across as clumsy BMWs decision not to follow suit and build an equally large machine seems to be a clever move.

But can the Q7 win back points inside? Theres no denying its spacious not even the Land Rover could match the Audis 2,040mm maximum load length, while the X5 fell 155mm short. The one-piece tailgate makes the area more accessible, too were it not for the high load sill. Even with the air-suspension lowered, the boot floor is 830mm above the road, and when you combine this with the low roofline, the height of the cabin is limited. That hampers maximum load volume, and is also bad news for headroom.

The rearmost seats are standard in the Audi Q7, and they undoubtedly offer more knee clearance than the X5s although adults will still be sitting with their legs splayed. Access is awkward, too, but more puzzlingly the middle row features a shorter, narrower and harder centre chair, which quickly becomes uncomfortable.

audi2.jpg

The front seats arent particularly well padded, either this S line model features sports chairs that increase support, but arent so cosseting. As with the X5, there are few reminders that youre sitting in an off-roader the layout is similar to the A6s yet Audi hasnt overlooked its legendary construction standards while building the cockpit.

Unfortunately, it didnt put enough thought into the view out. The combination of swept-back A-pillars and vast door mirrors means forward visibility is a real weak point. This, combined with the Q7s sheer size, makes it extremely tricky to manoeuvre around town.

Urban settings dont exactly give the engine much space to breathe, either and the 3.0-litre V6 diesel is at its best when allowed to stretch its legs. At low speeds, theres too much noise intrusion and the sluggish throttle response is more noticeable, but with 500Nm of torque at 1,750rpm, the Q7 has impressive overtaking ability provided the road is wide enough.

Yet the engine isnt as cultured and well mannered as either rivals, and similar criticisms can be aimed at the suspension set-up, too. Equipped with 20-inch alloys and low-profile tyres, its no wonder the Q7 has a lumpy, thumpy ride. Even with the air-suspension in comfort mode, its not very cosseting.

audi3.jpg

The well insulated cabin and raised seating does a decent job of distancing you from the world outside, but the suspension undoes that good work. Its not as if the Q7 handles brilliantly, either. Admittedly, its far more responsive than the Disco, with limited roll and precise turn-in, but it feels skittish unlike the BMW, it doesnt seem to have a proper grip on the tarmac.

The Q7 range starts from 37,285, so it undercuts the X5. But both models have costly and extensive options lists the extras added to our Audi raised the price by nearly 7,000.

2007 Caparo T1 Final Testing

Caparo T1 breaks cover during final stages of test and development

Caparo Vehicle Technologies a new and advanced automotive engineering consultancy formed a year ago by the rapidly expanding Caparo Group to provide carmakers globally with a centre of excellence in lightweight vehicle design is putting the finishing touches to the first car it has ever produced.

2007 Caparo T12007 Caparo T1 2The Caparo T1 is a high performance two-seater sports car with highly resolved aerodynamics, which has been designed with the looks and performance close to that of a Formula One race car. With series production about to commence, the car will be built for discerning customers seeking the ultimate track day experience in a road driveable vehicle. The Caparo T1 also serves as a technology flagship for demonstrating the companys high level vehicle design and engineering capabilities.

We said a year ago, at the outset of this programme, that the only way to truly convince carmakers that we have the experience and skills to design a safe, reliable, cost-efficient and high-performance car is to actually design and build one, says Ben Scott-Geddes, the cars co-designer and operations director at Caparo Vehicle Technologies. We've now done so were proud of what we've achieved and we now have something real and tangible to discuss.

Releasing full details of the cars specification during the final stages of prototype testing and development, the company has revealed that while customer cars are being readied for start of production, preparations are also well in hand for the T1s first public appearance as a running car and star attraction at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on 22-24 June 2007 which effectively becomes the vehicles launch date.

With distributors appointed in the UK, USA, South Africa and Dubai and more dealers under evaluation the company has a fast-filling order book. The handover of the car to the first customer is scheduled for July.

The biggest attraction for customers and the most striking aspect of the cars specification is its headline figure of 1,045bhp-per-tonne power-to-weight ratio. The Caparo T1 is the first series production car ever to break through the 1,000bhp-per-tonne barrier. This has been achieved by installing a home-grown 3.5-litre Caparo V8 engine, which produces 575bhp (425kW) at 10,500rpm and 420Nm (310lbft) at 9,000rpm, into an extremely lightweight body and chassis constructed of advanced composite materials and weighing just 550kg.

The Caparo T1 is around one-third the mass of the average family saloon. Its carbon/aluminium honeycomb monocoque features a separate composite crash structure at the front, while the rear sub-frame specifies aerospace grade steel. The non carbon-fibre steel suspension illustrates the companys ability to specify structural materials that can deliver the maximum performance at the lowest possible cost.

This means the Caparo T1 is lighter and faster even than a race-winning Le Mans sportscar. In terms of power-to-weight ratio its closest rival would be the latest super-bikes, which are now capable of delivering 175bhp into 185kg thereby just falling short of the magic 1,000bhp-per-tonne figure. Apart from these two wheelers and Formula One cars, no other road or track car comes anywhere close to the Caparo T1s power-to-weight ratio and highly efficient aerodynamic properties.

This supreme power-to-weight ratio results in a 0-60mph time of less than 2.5 seconds and the ability to reach 100mph within five seconds. Braking performance is no less impressive with 100mph to standstill being delivered in 3.5 seconds.

Were absolutely delighted with the progress weve made throughout the test and development programme, says engineering director and T1 co-designer Graham Halstead. The aerodynamic efficiency was already well established through wind tunnel testing of a scale model even before we built the first prototype. With tens of thousands of miles of durability trials and specific testing now under our belts we have progressively fine tuned the specification of the vehicle to meet and exceed even our high performance objectives.

The combination of highly resolved aerodynamics and chassis make the vehicle predictably safe and responsive to driver inputs, adds Scott-Geddes. The car drives and handles extremely well both on the road and track and this was the number one consideration in such an uncompromised high performance vehicle.

The Caparo T1 not only looks and performs like a Formula One car but it also helps us to demonstrate new and advanced technology to vehicle manufacturers in the aerospace, automotive, defence, marine and motorsport industries, says Richard Butler director Caparo Vehicle Technologies and chief executive of Caparo Vehicle Products. Already, were working on a number of highly confidential client projects, applying the same approach to aerodynamics, choice of materials and efficient vehicle design, which has allowed us to develop the T1.

Ultimately, our goal is to help carmakers to create a new generation of more fuel-efficient and lightweight family cars with significantly lower CO 2 emissions more in keeping with the needs of the 21 st century, says Angad Paul chief executive of the $1.2bn turnover Caparo Group, a fast-growing automotive Tier 1 supplier, which created Caparo Vehicle Technologies to back the T1 project. We will help carmakers achieve their objectives by continuing to invest in advanced technology in order to develop new lightweight materials and commercialise their manufacturing processes so they are affordable for mass production.

Given the cars performance potential - the engine has already been successfully bench tested to 700bhp on methanol - we are now looking into the possibility of introducing for our customers an international T1 race series, says commercial director Sean Butcher. Our objective is to give customers an affordable and reliable season on the track without incurring the extraordinary costs of running a real Formula One car.

Customers comprise private individuals with a passion and desire for ultra high performance and corporate clients requiring an affordable yet prestigious track car for the fast growing market of hospitality race experience events, added Butcher.

In terms of colour and trim each of these highly exclusive hand-built cars, which has a starting price of £190,000 (excluding taxes), will be tailored to suit individual customer requirements.

Caparo V8 engine specification:

* Bespoke 3.5 litre normally-aspirated fuel-injected V8
* 575bhp (425kW) at 10,500rpm

Jeep Patriot

What price patriotism?

In the case of Jeep, it's from £15,995 for its new Patriot model that hits showrooms this summer.

Jeep PatriotWhistling the Stars and Stripes, the Patriot comes in two trims, so you can pick from the usual Sport and Limited specs.

There's also the choice of 2.4-litre petrol engine or VW-sourced 2.0-litre turbodiesel, and petrol buyers can also choose between manual or continuously variable transmissions.

All Patriots come with six airbags, ESP and part-time four-wheel drive that only sends power to the rear wheels when the car senses a loss of traction.

I don't focus strictly on exotics or a certain brand; I shoot what's pleasing to the eye, be it an Audi or an Aston Martin. Thus, my growing collection of photographs concerns a great assortment of different vehicles ranging from the Ferrari Enzo and the Porsche Carrera GT super-exotics, to the more "modest" Volkswagen GTI and Subaru WRX STi. Fine art prints of my photos are available from my website.
